Who We Are
The Wallace Stegner Academy MTB Team gives student-athletes a place to build fitness, confidence, friendship, and grit through mountain biking. We welcome riders who are ready to work hard, support one another, and grow through challenge.
Our mission is simple: "doing hard things one hill at a time."
Team Values
Try new skills, take on tough climbs, and keep going when the trail gets hard.
Progress comes from consistent effort, not shortcuts.
We ride as teammates, encourage each other, and make room for every rider to improve.
Compete with respect, gratitude, and kindness.
Coaches
Head Coach
Adam Gerlach founded the WSA Composite MTB Team in 2025 with a vision of helping students discover what they are capable of through mountain biking. His coaching philosophy centers on the team's mission: "Doing hard things one hill at a time." He believes that the challenges riders face on the trail build resilience, confidence, and character that extend far beyond cycling.
In addition to coaching the team, Adam serves as a school leader at Wallace Stegner Academy and is passionate about creating opportunities for students to grow through meaningful challenges. Whether athletes are new to mountain biking or experienced racers, his goal is to help every rider develop skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of riding.

Ride Leaders
"I started mountain biking in college and rode for a couple of years before taking a very long break. I got back into it last year when my son joined the team, and I quickly realized I'd much rather be out riding than sitting around waiting for practice to end!
I really fell in love with mountain biking again as a coach, especially because I've had so much fun encouraging, motivating, and getting to know the amazing kids on our team. I don't know that I have one favorite trail, but Little Valley is a family favorite. It's a short climb followed by a fun downhill ride. I especially love riding Ann's Trail down from the neighborhood above!"

Ride Leader
I'm Anthony Christensen, and I've been coaching for 2 years now. Before joining the team, I had never done any mountain biking before. I got into it when my son, Liam, joined the team, and what started as a way to support him quickly became something I truly enjoy—not only coaching, but participating and riding myself. My favorite trails are Lucky Boy and Apex at Butterfield.
When it comes to coaching, I think what I enjoy most is seeing the impact biking has on the kids. I love watching how it builds confidence, determination, and a desire to keep improving. There's nothing better than seeing a rider accomplish something they once thought they couldn't do and watching the excitement and pride that comes with it.
I also love seeing how positive and supportive the kids are, especially when they're faced with a challenging trail. They encourage each other, celebrate each other's successes, and keep pushing one another forward. Getting to witness that growth, determination, and teamwork at practice every day is what makes coaching so rewarding for me. And being able to experience the sport alongside the kids has made it even more meaningful.

Donate
Most of our student-athletes qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet mountain biking is a sport with significant startup costs. Between registration fees, safety equipment, and race expenses, many families simply cannot afford the opportunity without support. The WSA Composite MTB Team exists to ensure that financial circumstances don't determine who gets to experience challenge, achievement, and belonging. Your donation helps put students on bikes, on trails, and on a path toward greater confidence and resilience.
